August/September News Roundup & TOC Preview

Betwixt‘s official launch is fast approaching, and we’re very excited to give the world a preview of the table of contents for issue 1. But first, here’s what we’ve been up to lately.

An interview with Joy appeared on the blog Six Questions For . . . on August 6. Here’s a snippet:

SQF: What are the top three things you look for in a submission and why?

JC: Quality writing, first of all. Of course, quality is an inherently subjective term. To me, a well-written story is one that grabs the reader’s attention at the beginning and holds on to it throughout, has a full and well-developed narrative with no missing or superfluous chunks, flows well, and acknowledges the rules of grammar and punctuation before trying to break them. . . .

For those who like numbers, we’ve once again put together a brief overview of our submission statistics, this time taking into account the data from the entire first reading period (May 20–September 1). Read it here.

Finally, we’re very pleased to announce that the following stories will appear in issue 1 of Betwixt:

  • “The Hind” by Ian Hamilton
  • “Said the Axe Man” by Tam MacNeil
  • “Mayor of a Flourishing City” by Mark Rigney
  • “Beyond, Behind, Below” by Betsy Phillips
  • “Long-Distance Call” by Benjamin Sherlock
  • “The Golden Coins of Victory” by Marlys Jarstfer
  • “The Red Danube” by Bernie Mojzes

The issue will launch on the site on October 1 and will be available for purchase in electronic and print-on-demand form shortly thereafter.

July News Roundup

A brief interview with Betwixt editor Joy Crelin is scheduled to go live on the blog Six Questions For . . . on August 6. Topics of discussion include our idea of good writing, common mistakes in submissions, and more. Six Questions For . . . host Jim Harrington has posted hundreds of insightful editor interviews over the past several years, and the schedule of upcoming interviews looks fantastic—check it out!

Betwixt is currently open to submissions and will remain so for the month of August. We plan to close to submissions at midnight EST on September 1 and remain closed until October. We’ll continue to post reminders as September approaches. For now, keep the stories coming!

June News Roundup

Early in the month, Betwixt editor Joy Crelin discussed hard sells, humor, and more in an interview with writer and editor Alex Shvartsman. Here’s a snippet:

What niche/role do you hope for Betwixt to fill among the speculative fiction markets? How would you describe an ideal Betwixt submission?

I envision Betwixt as a magazine that publishes a little bit of everything, is always eclectic but never wishy-washy, and introduces readers to genres, styles, and themes they never knew they liked.

The ideal Betwixt submission is well written, thought provoking, and entertaining. Perhaps most importantly, it’s a story, not simply a showcase for a particular character, setting, piece of technology, alien species, system of magic, political ideology, or what have you. Those things are all great, but they don’t constitute a story on their own.

For those who like numbers, we’ve written up a brief overview of our submission statistics for the magazine’s first month. Read it here.

Issue 1 is coming together nicely, and we’re very excited about it. We will continue to read submissions during July and August but plan to close to submissions for the month of September as we prepare for the magazine’s launch. Various launch festivities are in development, so stay tuned!
